Tyent USA Looks at Hydroelectricity

Water at Work in the World

Water inside world    Water plays a crucial role in the development of any nation, city, or even neighborhood.  Without water, nothing can even exist, let alone thrive.  Sustainer of life, creator of energy and Captain of the nautical highways, water makes the world go round.

Let’s do a little globe hopping and discover what water is up to in the Orient.

First though, a little electric lesson.

 Electricity

Blue Electricity     *Electricity is measured in terms of amperage, voltage and wattage.  Amperage, also referred to as amps, is a measure of the amount of electricity used.  Voltage, or volts, measures the force or pressure of electricity.  The amps multiplied by the volts, gives us the wattage, or the measure of work that electricity does per second.

 Hydroelectricity in China

All energy    A hydroelectric plant is a facility that uses the potential energy of water stored in a reservoir to create electricity.  That energy is used to operate its turbines.  These turbines are connected to large generators that regulate varying volumes of water according to demand and create the electricity accordingly.

Currently (no pun intended), hydro-power is a renewable energy source that provides about 25% of the world’s electricity and is more cost effective than many other sources of power.

China is the world’s leader in the production of hydroelectric energy.  Of the 10 biggest hydroelectric plants in the world, two are in China.

The Three Gorges hydro power station in the Yichang Hubei, province, China, is the biggest of its kind in the world, producing a staggering 22,500 MW of power.  The source of water for this facility is the Yangtze River.

This miraculous feat of engineering took nearly twenty years to complete.

The power generated by this plant provides electricity to nine provinces and two cities including Shanghai.  To put the amount of power produced by the Three Gorges plant into perspective, a kilowatt is 1000 watts, a mega watt is a thousand kilo watts, so the plant produces 22, 500 million watts of electricity per second.  Shocking to say the least.

Shanghai is the largest city in the world with a population of 23.9 million people.  If you think your neighbors are too close to you consider this, in Shanghai, there are 9,700 people per square mile.

Astonishingly however, this figure pales when compared to New York City where the population density is an incredulous 27,000 people per square mile!
